Catherine Nolan, Hamilton Township NJ School District: Standing Together Against Racial Injustice

As we reflect on the ongoing nationwide protests demanding an end to police brutality and racial justice, we, as educators in the Catherine Nolan, Hamilton Township NJ School District, stand in solidarity with our students, colleagues, and communities. We recognize the deep frustration and anger felt by many, particularly young African Americans who are witnessing the violence of modern-day lynchings and brutality by law enforcement.

Sixty years ago, students playing a pivotal role in social movements is not new. Remember the students who sat down at a lunch counter in North Carolina's five-and-dime store, galvanizing a national movement? Students have consistently shown themselves to be leaders in powerful and effective movements for change. We acknowledge that our students often teach us valuable lessons about resilience, empathy, and leadership.

As educators, we strive to create safe, welcoming environments that foster relationships and help our students build resilience. Our ultimate goal is to prepare them for their future, hopefully one where they can thrive. To achieve this, we must work together as a community to address the systemic issues that perpetuate racial injustice.

In support of these efforts, the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) has provided valuable resources for organizing and back-to-school programs. These tools help educators like us build stronger connections with our students and communities. We also recognize the importance of addressing specific issues affecting our students, such as DACA, immigrant rights, and supporting our Asian American and Pacific Islander community.

As we move forward, we reaffirm our commitment to creating Real Solutions for Kids and Communities. This includes standing in solidarity with our paraprofessionals and school-related personnel who play a vital role in our schools. By working together, we can build a better future for all students, regardless of their race, ethnicity, or background.

In this critical moment, we stand united as educators, parents, and community members to demand an end to police brutality and fight for racial justice. We see you, hear you, and stand with our students and colleagues in this collective struggle for a more just and equitable society.
